Southern California Spring Cleaning Tips03/13/2017Kimball Jones Spring is almost here, Southern California! If you’ve spent winter huddled inside, now’s the perfect opportunity to crack those windows and begin thinking about spring cleaning. You may have your annual spring cleaning regimen, but all too often homeowners can forget a few important tasks. These are our recommendations to max out your spring cleaning from your floors to your shutters, so you can enjoy the best season in Southern California. Spring Clean Your Windows It’s normal to wake up in the middle of March and realize that the lousy view out your bedroom window isn’t because of winter weather–it’s because of a gunked window. Spring is a great opportunity to deep clean your windows. Get that beautiful view back with the following steps. If your window opens, completely open it and clean out any dirt or debris in the sill or track. First clean out as much as you can with the track dry, then use warm soapy water and a rag to clean out the remainder. This helps your window operate more easily, and ensure your window can completely shut. Spray the glass with a glass cleaner. You can use either a store-bought chemical cleaner, or mix your own at home using two parts warm water and one part vinegar. Wipe the windows with a microfiber cloth. Microfibers are preferred for cleaning glass and leave fewer streaks. Don’t Neglect to Clean the Window Treatments A spotless glass window isn’t worth much the window treatment isn’t similarly clean. For fabric window treatments like drapes or curtains, cleaning can be difficult. For thick fabrics, remove them from the wall and shake them outdoors to get rid of any loose debris, then put them in the washer and run on cold water and air dry them. For thinner window treatments, you’ll need to be more delicate in how you handle them, so wash them by hand in a bathtub or sink. Plantation shutters are probably the simplest window treatment when it comes to cleaning. Remove dust by wiping down with a microfiber cloth or barely damp rag. To spot clean, use a slightly wet cloth to get rid of any stain, then go over with a dry cloth. Spring is also an ideal time to think about replacing your window treatments. Give Some Love to Your Appliances Your refrigerator, oven and washing machine are as much pieces of furniture as they are appliances. Especially with newer appliances like those made of stainless steel, looks are equally as important as function. Clean all the nooks and crannies of your appliances, and get them back to the condition they were when you first bought them. Stainless steel appliances can be shined up with a solution made of 1 tsp. dish soap and 1 qt. of warm water, applied with a damp cloth and air-dried. Don’t Neglect a Single Surface You’re likely going to give your floors and walls some long overdue TLC when you do your spring cleaning, but be sure to spread some love around to some of those often neglected surfaces. Below are just a couple of the areas that are often skipped over when spring cleaning: All knobs or switches that get touched a lot. These could be on the toilet, doors, or any other spot in your house. All surfaces in your shower, like the door, base, and soap ledge. The top sides of ceiling fans. Appliance undersides - especially the larger appliances such as your refrigerator164 and washer/dryer.
